Reading Every Night

Reading Every Night

still life reading

For as long as I can remember, when putting my children to bed. The routine my husband and I would set was, “bath, milk, teeth, book, toilet, lights out (bed)”.

Our kids appreciated the routine. They’d get involved with the book part avidly running to choose the book for the night.

Until of course, they both wanted to choose their own book, so then we’d end up reading two, and actually, sometimes, we’d end up reading more than that as well…(not sure how the kids out maneuvered us there).

This bedtime routine continued until the kids were about six years old. During which time, they were more interested in movies or WiiU machines. Plus, they were also going to school, so homework took up a lot of extra home time.

This blog is basically advocating that, no matter where you are in the world, setting up a healthy routine with your children around learning and reading will aide them be the best versions of themselves as they age.

Today my two kids are in there early adult phase. My daughter loves to read novals to ‘switch’ off before bed, (just like me). My son, prefers non-fictional books, things that improve his mind.

This healthy approach to learning and reading came about, from my love of books.

I have past this onto the kids, so that they can have the best head start with their education.

Reading books to your child, truly does make a big difference. Not just with your child’s mental development, but their interaction skills and confidence. Once they learnt to read, we’d be asking them to read to us.

It would totally blow our minds, to see our little ones’ reading with confidence and expression at such young ages. But we knew, that this was due to our early exposure to books.

Do you read to your little ones’ at night?

Little Touch LeapPad Worked Wonders

little touch LeapFrog

When my babies were less then two, we didn’t have much.

We were renovating at the time, a modest 3 bedroom two story home, that use to be repossessed, so we got it very cheaply.

I personally have always enjoyed reading, so as soon as my babies were born I would read them stories, making up the stories to the pictures they were seeing.

As they grew, they were luck enough to receive a LeapPad device.

It was a small device they could rest on their laps whilst we turned the pages together and pointed to each of the things on the page that the LeapPad would ask us to find.

We had an array of different books to read using this device.

As time continued my children learnt to turn the LeapPad on themselves and interpret and understand what was being asked, and would sit for hours, pointing and laughing and enjoying their LeapPad.

We needed to write a blog post about it, as it was truly amazing for our little ones’ as their brains were developing.

My daughter is now in grade 8. She’s the youngest in the grade, and one of the brightest, loving science, maths and excelling at english, and other subjects.

My son is in grade 5, and is a whiz at maths, and has a highly analytical brain, whereby, he has a knack for javascript and coding. (But that is for another blog post).

If you have small children that aren’t going to preschool yet, I highly recommend the LeapPad series. Both my children had the best relationship with literature as they were younger, and it made all the difference to them as they’ve continued to develop.
